Hoya Pubicalyx

Hoya pubicalyx grows in nature in the Philippines, where as an epiphyte it grows on trees of moist tropical forests. In its natural habitat it can grow to several meters in length, while in home cultivation it reaches up to two meters in length. It is valued for low requirements and attractive appearance. Its phenomenal fleshy, waxy and shiny leaves make the plant captivate even when it is not blooming. Hoya publicalyx has lush foliage, and its green leaves are covered with silver spots. Young leaves are usually purple or brown, and as they grow, they become green and more or less silvered. However, the most impressive are the dazzling, umbellate inflorescences, consisting of many star-shaped flowers. Depending on the amount of light, flowers can take on a single color from almost black and red with pink glow to all shades of red. Flowers produce sweet nectar, are strongly fragrant and bloom up to two weeks.

Requirements and care

Hoya pubicalyx is easy to grow and resistant to pests and diseases. It can endure a lot of neglect, but in order not to expose it to unnecessary stress, it is worth ensuring proper growing conditions. Prefer a workstation with lots of diffused light. She is very susceptible to burns, so it is inadvisable for her to place in direct sunlight. It feels best at 15 ° C to 25 ° C and high humidity. He likes sprinkling. Hoja does not tolerate excess and stagnant water, so the pot should have a lot of drainage holes, and the substrate must be permeable and well drained. As a substrate, you can use a mixture of soil with a slightly acidic pH, containing peat, coconut fibers, coarse sand, perlite or pumice. In summer, hoja is watered abundantly and regularly, but the substrate must dry between subsequent watering. In winter, watering sparingly so as to prevent sagging leaves. During the growing season, hoja is fed once a week with fertilizer for flowering plants or orchids, using half the recommended dose. Hoja is sensitive to a change of place. It should not be moved, especially before and during flowering, as it may cause flowers and buds to fall. It grows and looks best when grown on supports or in suspended pots

The plant is sold in a pot with a diameter of 21 cm. Plant height measured with the pot is approx. 90 – 110 cm.
