Philodendron Melanochrysum is one of the most beautiful philodendrons, which, apart from its large size, impresses with its exceptionally spectacular leaves. In nature, it grows in rainforests mainly in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. It is a variable species and leaves of each specimen may differ slightly from each other. Variability is also seen at the different stages of growth. In young plants, the leaves are small and wider, initially scarlet-brown in color and leathery, turning dark green over time. Ripe leaves delight with a velvety texture and an almost black and green color, beautifully iridescent with a soft velor in the rays of light. Pale green nerves are phenomenally drawn against the background of dark, velvety green. Ultimately, the leaves are heart-shaped and very elongated. In home cultivation, they usually reach approx. 30 cm in length, but in older specimens grown under ideal conditions, they can be as much as 90-100 cm in length. Their vertical deviation from the long tail on which they are set is characteristic. Philodendron melanochrysum grown while climbing the support will have larger and longer leaves that will arrange themselves in a tile-like pattern, giving it a phenomenal appearance. It is a collector’s species intended for advanced enthusiasts of exotic home vegetation!

Requirements and cultivation:

Philodendron is an undemanding plant that is easy to grow. It prefers a position that is slightly shaded with indirect sunlight. The best temperature for him will be between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius. Avoid drafts and keep the soil constantly moist. Philodendrons prefer a high air humidity of about 70 – 80%. The plant should be fertilized with green plant fertilizer once every two weeks from spring to autumn.

The plant is sold in a pot with a diameter of 12 cm. Plant height measured with the pot is approx. 55 – 70 cm.
