Paphiopedilum are South Asian orchids that come from humid forests. They are unique for several reasons:
most of them are terrestrial (they grow in the ground), while most orchids are epiphytes (they grow on trees);
they have unusual flowers with a single petal that takes the shape of a pouch;
are difficult to clone, meaning most are grown from seed into unique plants.
Paphiopedilum orchids are one of the most widely grown and hybridized orchids and are easy to care for.
Paphiopedilum are orchids with low light, which makes them easy to grow at home. Hybrid varieties grow well in typical home conditions, and many growers grow all of their Paphiopedilum in the same temperature range of around 19 to 25 degrees Celsius with good results. Paphiopedilum grows well under artificial lighting. The leaves of this plant will tell you if there is enough light or not. If the leaves are slightly red in color, the plant gets too much light. If its leaves are dark green and the plant is not blooming, it means that it is not getting enough light. Medium green is fine.
Paphiopedilum is a moderately humid environment with a humidity of 40 to 70%. The humidity around the orchid can be increased with a small humidifier or by placing the plant in a tray filled with pebbles and water.
Paphiopedilum do not have pseudobulbs, or water-storing stems. Since Paphiopedilum do not have the ability to store water for a long time and do not like to dry out completely, they need to be watered a little more than other orchids. They should be watered approximately every five days, depending on where they are located and on what substrate they are planted. If they are planted in moss, water when the top is dry. Do not use softened water as the salts can damage the plant. Although these orchids like to be moist, don’t let them stand in water as this will cause their roots to rot.
Once your plant has finished flowering for 3-6 weeks, trim the leaf spike and continue grooming until it blooms again in about a year.
The plant is sold in a pot with a diameter of 11 cm. Plant height measured with the pot is approx. 30-35 cm.
